Flexibility and accommodations

Academic flexibility and supportive measures

For academic flexibility and support that students may need or request, guidance can be found on the Academic Accommodations Hub website. In a nutshell:

  • There are some situations students will tell you about (illness, injury, bereavement, other hardship) for which flexibility is recommended and requesting documented proof is discouraged.
  • There are other situations (including but not limited to sexual violence) in which students are encouraged to work with campus resources who will reach out to you, or your faculty, to request supportive measures. These requests should be honored whenever possible.

Workplace flexibility and supportive measures

  • Employees in your unit may also experience temporary illness, injury, or hardship. There is some flexibility that is within your authority to provide. For non-represented staff, the Flexible Work Arrangements toolkit covers this well.
  • For needs requiring medical leave or disability accommodations, please follow the prescribed process, rather than following your intuitions or common sense about what seems best.

Leaves and workplace accommodations are regulated in many ways; these regulations ensure fairness and equity.
