Talking about retirement

Late career employees (staff and faculty) may consult you about preparing for retirement.

While, as an academic leader, you never want to make anyone feel pressured to retire, you should definitely be prepared to support those who come to you with questions.

  • For general questions about the retirement process, or resources for retirees, the UC Berkeley Retirement Center serves all retirees, both faculty and staff, and is a great place to start.
  • For late career Senate faculty thinking ahead to retirement, the Retirement Liaison is a useful contact, particularly for those contemplating signing Pathway Agreements. Senate faculty should also be encouraged to participate in the Emeriti Academy. For this and other information, including how to talk about retirement with active faculty, see the section on late career and retirement on the website of the Office of Faculty Equity & Welfare.
