Creating Community: DEIB and healthy department climate

As an academic leader, you have an opportunity to shape a healthy climate within your academic unit.

This includes:

  • Setting, communicating, and modeling expectations for how people conduct and express themselves in the department, consistent with Berkeley's Principles of Community
  • Working with your equity advisors and climate committee on DEIB initiatives
  • Seeking out interventions to help with climate issues in the department

Offices that can help you with any or all of this include the PATH to Care Center, the Office for Faculty Equity & Welfare, the Office for Faculty and Departmental Diversity Initiatives, the Office for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging within People & Culture, and the Office for Graduate Diversity within the Graduate Division.

It doesn't matter where you start; these campus partners are connected to one another (and others), and can steer you to the right resource for your needs.

You don't have to do everything; but anything you do will move your unit in the right direction.
