Facilities: maintenance and workplace safety

The success of your unit includes ensuring that your physical space on campus is functional and well kept.

Most of the information you'll need about the maintenance and security of campus buildings and other facilities can be found on the Facilities Services website (Administration Division), though some key functions are covered by other units (e.g., Environmental Health & Safety, in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research).

  • The Facilities Building Maintenance unit is the place to start with building issues related to mechanical, electrical, and utility systems; built-in furniture; doors, windows, locks, and security systems; insulation; signage; glazing; painted surfaces; and roof drain systems).
  • For custodial services, landscaping, and pest control, the Campus Operations unit is the best place to start.
  • For workplace safety, including but not limited to radiation safety, personal-protective equipment (PPE), equipment and tool safety, and waste disposal, the Office of Environmental Health & Safety is a great place to start.

It is a good idea to become familiar with your building manager and regional Asset Manager.

Remember the rules on outside contracting

Rules governing outside contracting mean you should use campus services whenever possible for building maintenance and updates.
