Individual in crisis

Finding help for an individual in crisis is important. Learning who to call ahead of time makes it easier to make good decisions in the moment.

  • As always, call 911 or UCPD's emergency number (510-642-3333) if there is an emergency.
  • If you become aware that a student is in acute distress, a good place to start is to submit a Care Report to the Center for Support and Intervention.
    • The Gold Folder, compiled by University Health Services and other campus partners, is a rich compendium of resources and advice in various situations.
  • For an employee in distress, you can seek advice yourself from, or refer the employee to, Employee Assistance (510-643-7754, employeeassistance@berkeley.edu). UCPD can also advise you in situations where a welfare check (by a police department or a local mobile crisis team) may be appropriate.
  • 988 is the new nationwide three-digit number now available for suicide and mental health crisis, available to everyone in the U.S.

For less urgent situations in which individuals need help, please see the "Illness, crises, hardship" section of this toolkit, where more detail is provided.
