Search Announcement: Associate Vice Provost for the Faculty

The University of California, Berkeley invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Vice Provost for the Faculty, with an intended start date of July 1, 2024.

The Associate Vice Provost for the Faculty (AVPF) holds a critical leadership position on the Berkeley campus, providing support and oversight in the areas of academic recruitment, faculty advancement, faculty equity, and faculty welfare. The AVPF serves as a leader and partner across a breadth of issues, including:

  • Faculty hiring, promoting inclusive hiring practices, ensuring broad applicant pools, and helping to create a welcoming climate for all;
  • Supporting faculty relocation and the onboarding of new faculty;
  • Advising on academic personnel policies and their development;
  • Monitoring faculty advancement;
  • Advising faculty about tenure, advancement, and retention; and
  • Supporting programs and services that contribute to the well-being and creativity of retired faculty and academic staff.
  • In the past, the AVPF role has been involved in a number of cutting-edge studies, both at the campus and system-wide level, on issues of faculty equity, pay, recruitment, and retention. The next AVPF would be encouraged to continue such research efforts if they desire.

The AVPF reports directly to the Vice Provost for the Faculty and is also a key advisor to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion, and other campus leaders. The AVPF works collaboratively with senior campus leaders and the Academic Senate, and represents the campus on the Academic Senate’s Committee for Diversity Equity, and Campus Climate (DECC). This position supervises the directors of the Office for Faculty Equity and Welfare and the UC Berkeley Retirement Center, and works closely with the Academic Personnel Office.

Candidates should possess the following qualifications:

  • Current member of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate, holding tenure, preferably at the rank of Professor;
  • A record of administrative experience consistent with assuming the managerial and supervisory duties of the AVPF;
  • Evidence of being an imaginative and collaborative leader;
  • Effective work in support of the University’s goals in diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Strong familiarity with the breadth of relevant campus programs and policies;
  • Exceptional judgment and a demonstrated ability to make difficult decisions based on sometimes conflicting information and opinions; and
  • Sensitivity in working with others, the ability to communicate clearly, and the ability to assist with conflict resolution.
  • Depending on the desires and needs of the successful candidate, this position would be between a 50 and 100%-time administrative leadership position. In the initial year, the new AVPF will likely wish to devote at least 75% time to the position.
